A circular Ireland

Irish society is at an inflection point. The recent past has been linear – buy the item, use the item, dispose of the item, then buy a replacement item. The future, however, looks far more circular writes Gordon Hunt, Communications Manager at circular.ie.

Keeping products in circulation has begun at pace. The rise in services like Depop and Vinted for clothing, the consistent interest in established platforms such as Adverts or Facebook Marketplace for things like furniture, tools and more, and growing attention from the Government towards sustainable practices has put circular choices front and centre.

But what is ‘circular’? Simply put, being circular means minimising the amount of things we put to waste, by reducing our consumption, re-using things and repairing what breaks. If we all take small steps they’ll add up to big positive change. As we like to say, ‘circular’ is smarter all round, for you, for Ireland and for our planet.

Everybody in it together

One of the Government’s key aims in its new Circular Economy Strategy is to empower people to make sustainable, cost-effective lifestyle choices. This is something Circular.ie is taking seriously.

Circular.ie is a digital platform and resource hub, designed to make the circular economy easy to understand and act on. Supported by research and insights, we’re here to make circularity simple for everyone: what circular living is, what it means for your life, and what you can do about it.

Circular living is not just about individual habits, but about creating a culture where better choices become easier and more normal over time. Whether that means choosing second-hand before buying new, borrowing instead of purchasing, or fixing something that would otherwise be replaced, every action helps reduce waste and conserve resources.

Over time, these choices can save money, strengthen local communities, and support a more resilient economy. Circular.ie exists to help make those choices more visible, more practical and more accessible for everyone in Ireland.

Local support

Our team is here to support those already building circular communities, initiatives and social enterprises to do the same. We do this through offering grants to help community groups improve communications across the ecosystem, providing toolkits to help time-poor activists better tell their stories, and highlighting what is happening, where it is happening, so that people all over Ireland are more aware of the options surrounding them.

In its simplest form, at Circular.ie we highlight the exciting options available to people in Ireland, with local service providers given support to better tell their story, reach their communities, and affect change across the country.

This all contributes to Ireland’s circular transformation, while demonstrating what’s possible for others to follow. Small actions, shared insights, collective impact.
